Update MVPurple Beach

During the weekend, the fire extinguishing operations successfully continued and air and swipe samples were taken on board “Purple Beach”. The pollution control vessels “Mellum” and “Neuwerk” did not detect any harmful substances in the surrounding area.
The ATF - Analytic Task Force - has cleared the “Purple Beach” for procedure to an emergency berth.
This morning four salvage experts and three members of the fire-fighting unit boarded MV “Purple Beach”. The salvage experts remained onboard when MV “Purple Beach” left her anchorage position on 08:35hrs and commenced her voyage to Jadeweserport Wilhelmshaven. The vessel is being towed by two tugs and accompanied by MV “Mellum” and “Neuwerk”.

Press release MV Purple Beach

The Central Command for Maritime Emergencies Germany took over mission control.
On 25.05.2015 evening, smoke was detected onboard MV “Purple Beach” [LOA: 192m, beam: 27m; Marshall Island flag] in cargo hold 3. The ship’s own carbon dioxide - extinguishing system was used by the crew and the concerned cargo hold sealed as an immediate counter measure. The crew has been evacuated and brought to safety.
The Central Command for Maritime Emergencies Germany has taken over the command for the fire-fighting operations and all further actions since 26.05.2015, 02:00hrs. The vessel’s operator is supporting the rescue team by all available resources.
A fire-fighting unit of the Central Command for Maritime Emergencies Germany (short: BBE) and the multi-purpose vessel “Mellum” have been accompanying the “Purple Beach” at deep water roads anchorage in the German Bight (abt 30km west of Helgoland).
BBE is examining the “Purple Beach” which loaded fertilizers in Antwerp. The Atlantic Task Force (ATF) has also been alerted.
The measures taken shall provide an overall impression to the Central Command for Maritime Emergencies Germany in order to determine the further steps.
The operator is already in negotiation for another charter vessel and will announce the substituting vessel shortly.

Pressemitteilung MS Purple Beach

Havariekommando übernimmt Gesamteinsatzleitung
Am Abend des 25.05.2015 kam es auf der MS PURPLE BEACH [Länge 192m, Breite 27m; Flagge Marshall Inseln] zu einer Rauchentwicklung in Laderaum 3. Die Besatzung setzte daraufhin die bordeigene Kohlendioxid-Löschanlage ein, und riegelte den betroffenen Laderaum ab.
Das Havariekommando Cuxhaven hat seit dem 26.05.2015 zwei Uhr morgens die Gesamteinsatzleitung für die Löscharbeiten und alle weiteren Schritte übernommen. Die Reederei unterstützt das Havariekommando mit sämtlichen ihr zur Verfügung stehenden Mitteln.
Eine Brandbekämpfungseinheit (BBE) des Havariekommandos und das Mehrzweckschiff „MELLUM“ befinden sich seit gestern früh beim Havaristen auf der Tiefwasserreede in der Deutschen Bucht (ca. 30km westlich von Helgoland).
Die BBE untersucht derzeit die „PURPLE BEACH“, die in Antwerpen unter anderem Düngemittel geladen hat. Zusätzlich hat das Havariekommando die Analytic Task Force (ATF) alarmiert.
Mit den eingeleiteten Schritten will sich das Havariekommando einen umfassenden Gesamteindruck über die Situation des Schiffes verschaffen, um anschließend das weitere Vorgehen festzulegen.
Die Besatzung des MS „Purple Beach“ ist evakuiert und befindet sich in Sicherheit.
Die Reederei führt bereits Verhandlungen über ein anderes Charterschiff , und wird in Kürze den Namen des Ersatzschiffes bekanntgeben.
